When you, entering a forest, perceive the beauty of the forest and you feel to be in a complete harmony with it, then, intuitively, you are in peace with the Deities. They are an essential part of our real nature, our Deep Nature, and when we are separated by our real nature we live in the fear. Perceiving such normality means giving a real sense to our lives.

Undertaking the Roman Via to the Deities implies a path to awakening: with the practice of continuing consciousness and awareness we undertake our walking knowing that taking the path is more important than the destination itself

December the 21st: Divalia

This day is dedicated to an ancient Goddess, Angerona - Dea Dia, so ancient that also for Romans was rather mysterious. This day and Dea Dia are devoted to the rites of a particularly important moment of the year: the winter solstice

In this peculiar day named dies brevissimus (shortest day), the Ianua Coeli (The Sky Gates) are opened (the Ianus' golden key) and light preavils again over darkness. The biological cycle of life begins again.

The importance of Dea Dia is given also by the fact that the temple of this Goddess, on 19 or 29 May, was the sacred place where the Arvales met to attend to important liturgies (Arvalia) in favour of Lares. Arvales, dressed with white gowns (white expresses magical sovereignty) through ceremonies for Dea Dia, Lares and Mars-father affirmed the ties of the mankind with Mother Earth.

During this day, which marks the beginning of the Arvalic Year, we remember our Lares or The Ancestors and the future descendants; we, the living part of the family, thus are the "present ring" of a long chain being suspended between past and future.

The Lar Familiaris is the "family's soul" whose symbol is the home firelight as in the case of Vesta Mater.

The home ceremony must be made after the sunset being addressed to the imagines of the two Home Lares (representing the two universal polarities: masculine and feminine).

The opening formula is as follows

SACRA PRIVATA PERPETUE MANENTO

Then the Ancient Invocation (Semones) of the Arvales:

E Nos Lases Ivvate (three times)
Neve Lve Rve Marmar Sins Incvurrere in Pleores (three times)
Satvr Fv Fere Mars Limen Sali Sta Berber (three times)
Semvnis Alternei Advocapit Conctos (three times)
E Nos Marmar Ivvato (three times)
Trivmpe (five times)

Afterwards, a very frugal meal can be eaten based on a simple soup of spelt, broad beans, lentils accompanied by simple flatbread and wine. Meat must be totally avoided.

21 Dicembre: Divalia

SACRA PRIVATA PERPETUE MANENTO

E Nos Lases Ivvate (tre volte)
Neve Lve Rve Marmar Sins Incvurrere in Pleores (tre volte)
Satvr Fv Fere Mars Limen Sali Sta Berber (tre volte)
Semvnis Alternei Advocapit Conctos (tre volte)
E Nos Marmar Ivvato (tre volte)
Trivmpe (cinque volte)

Traditional Roman Values

There are some ethical values which not only public and private life, but also the Traditional Roman Religion constantly refers to. Surely the most important is Pietas, a very complex concept which regulates the relations between Mankind and Divine. I'll discuss this concept separately. I think that it is important to cite other values whose description may become useful also for the understanding of the concept of Pietas.

The first one is the idea of Fides. It describes the reciprocal ethical and religious obligation between mankind and the Divine and among humans. Fides can be expressed thorugh loyalty, fidelity, honesty in acts and words, in public and private life, in reciprocal trust and security.

Then it must be cited Constantia or the absolute coherence and firmness in values and decisions. It emerges in the everyday life through firmness and constance in behaviours.

Finally there is Gravitas. It is a quiet and secure force about the awareness of the personal moral value. It emerges in dignity and composure of behaviours, acts and words.

These three values are embedded into the idea of Virtus. Volgarity, excess and lack of control do not belong to Roman Tradition. If you do not hold Virtus and the values connected to it, it is not possible to immagine any approach to Pieats: Pietas will become just a series of empty rites withou any value.

Valori tradizionali Romani

December

December derives its name from the fact to be the 10th month of the king Numa's ancient calendar which begins on March. December represents the "depth", the origins and the beginning of Time. This is a very particular month focused essentially on the festivities and rites of Saturnalia and Divalia (dec. 21st). If Janus represents the beginning, Saturnus (to which December is dedicated) represents the "end".

Main festivities are:

1 december - Bona Dea
5 december - Faunalia
10 december - Janus' Agonalia
15 december- Consualia
17 december- Opalia
18 - 22 december- Saturnalia
21 december- Divalia
25 december- Sol Invictus

Dicembre

1 dicembre - Bona Dea
5 dicembre - Faunalia
10 dicembre - Agonalia di Giano
15 dicembre - Consualia
17 dicembre - Opalia
18 - 22 dicembre - Saturnalia
21 dicembre - Divalia
25 dicembre - Sol Invictus

The Spelt

I've noticed that my previous post about food has stimulated some interest. For this reason now I will describe a rather complex issue related to a peculiar food which I have deliberately not mentioned in my previous post: the spelt.

Spelt in fact plays a pivotal role within the Traditional Roman Religion: for this reason I devote to spelt this specific post but highlighting that it is very difficult to be exahustive here. I thus will cite just few general concepts and ideas.

Spelt is a sacred food by definition. It plays the same role barley plays for ancient greeks. Gods and Goddesses address to the followers of roman religion calling them: spelt eaters.

There are many rites linked to spelt harvesting I cannot describe here. It is important to remember that spelt was eaten as puls: this is a sort of mush with a little bit of lard and a puree of broad beans for the festivity dedicated to Carna (June the 1st)

Panes Laureati were not proved flat breads made with spelt, water, salt and laurel leaves.

The Flamen Dialis ate strues (spelt and honey) and fertum (spelt, salt, milk and sheep liver): these were sacred not proved flat breads.

It is important to remind the mola salsa (spelt and salt) prepared by the Vestales. this flour was necessary for bloody sacrifices: the animal became sacred when its head was covered with mola salsa.

A flat bread made with spelt and honey was necessary also for not-bloody sacrifices (libum) and with the name of ianual was used as a gift to be exchanged during the festivities of january the 1st.

A specific discussion should be reserved to confarreatio (the communion or marriage with spelt): this is the most sacred form of marriage.

Spelt is the symbol of frugality, semplicity and moderation in eating.

Spelt is sacred in the Traditional Roman Religion also because it is linked to the importantce of the family and the Ancestors' Cult. Spelt represents the Ancient Food or "what our ancestors ate". Eating spelt in the everyday diet within the family the links with the ancestors and the family links themselves are simbolically reinforced.

For this reason it is important to eat spelt in any occasion: today it is quite easy. Spelt can be easily found in soups, grains and it can be eaten also in different ways and in many salads. It is possible to find also spelt flour or bread and flat breads made with spelt flour.

Also taday spelt can become again an important element within the everyday meals and in many specific festivities: for example a spelt soup is the central dish for the meal in the night of december 21st for the festivity od Divalia and the opening of Janua Coeli.

Food

Food, diet and meals play a relevant role in the Traditional Roman Religion. Unfortunately the imagine we have today of the relation of the Ancient Romans with food has been totally distorted by the defaming propaganda of the new religions.

Nonetheless, the Ancient Romans themselves tended to be ironic about the way liberti (often christians) ate without any decency and limits: just to mention the famous Trimalchio's Party in the Petronius Satyricon.

On the contrary, Ancient Romans ate very little and in a very simple way: we now found our everyday habits on the same tradition.

The diet was based on three main frugal meals:

jentaculum (breakfast)
prandium (lunch)
cena (dinner)

During the meal just few things were eaten: usually vegetables (beans, lentils, cabbage, fresh vegetables) and fruits, a little meat, bread and flat bread, wine.

Only the cena was a real meal, while the others were rather fast snacks.

Today our meals must be inspired to the same principles: frugality and balance.

Meat consumption in particular must be limited: never eat raw meat. In some days it is not possible to eat meat (see the calendar and the festivities). Meat thus plays a peculiar role also in consideration of the principle "from death, life": during sacrifice it was used the formula "Macte!" whose meaning is "grow!"

The calendar in fact inspired often what, when and how eat. In the same way, a totally rigorous vegetarian diet is not predicted in the Roman Traditional Religion.

Food and diet thus are used to confirm the role of mankind within the natural order (see also the prometeus myth): we are not savage animals hence we do not eat too much meat and raw meat.

Moderation, frugality and balance always inspire the diet

Too much food or alchool absolutely do not belong to the Traditional Roman Religion also because this violates the principles of dignitas and gravitas to which any pater and mater familias are inspired.

Meals are also sacred events because the meal is the moment where family members gather: meals are thus sacred to Vesta

Cibo e Alimentazione

November

November, whose name derives from the fact that it was the 9th month in the ancient calendar beginning in March, represents a period of "interiority". November follows the way of natural energy back under the ground during winter. This period is dedicated to underground Gods (Inferi) from who derives the energy for the creatures on the surface.

November is thus dedicated to Pluto (Underground Jupiter) whose name means "extremely rich", and to Proserpina (the Girl walking like snakes). Pluto represents the deep, Proserpina a vital force nourishing life in spring.

Black animals, cypress and narcissus are sacred to Pluto. He may be evoked beating the hands on the ground

Pomegranate tree and poppy are sacred to Proserpina who protects also funerals.

Novembre

_________________________________

The day october 13 is dedicated to water and springs with the festivity of Fontinalia. In this day we put flowers near springs and fountains to evidence the importance to tribute to this so essential element for our life. Being water we drink and giving us life, sacred also fountains are sacred. Fons/Juturna represents the spirit, in its two male/female polarities, of the sacralization of drinking water and springs.

Fountains and springs detain also an important symbolic value because they represent a "beginning": consequently Juturna (Iuturna, Diuturna) is strctly linked to Janus (The Beginning).

It is relevant to note that springs (as loci - sites), host particular spiritual figures: the nymphs. They are the sacral representation of inner water sites. In addition water (not seawater) is linked to the figure of Neptun.

mercoledì 6 ottobre 2010

October

October represents the last month in the active year symbolizing also the beginning of a period of intense spirituality. In October Nature begins in fact her period of cyclical death.

Oct. 12 is dedicated to Fontinalia or the "Celebration of underground and invisible springs" while oct. 15 is dedicated to the complex ritual of "October Equus".

Ottobre

September

The name of this month derives from the fact to be the 7th month in the ancient calendar, beginning on March, of King Numa.

September is dedicated to Jupiter (Iuppiter means "God Father") representing the sacralization of Authority in particular social and public authority, like his female polarity Juno.

Jupiter thus represents the State and the Family as social institution. He represents, as cosmic energy, the sky, the rain, the snow, the lightning and the dew.

Sacred animals to Jupiter are the eagle and the vulture.
Sacred tree to Jupiter is the Oak: Jupiter may manifest himself through the whoosh of the oak's leaves

Jupiter has a long list of appellations (Indigitamenta) among which Lucetius (Light's Origin), Pluvius (raining), Fulgurator (Day Lightning) Summanus (Night Lightning), Pantocrator (Lord of anything), Trioculos (with three eyes), Prodigalis (prodigies Liberator), Penninus (Lord of peaks).

The main Jupiter's symbol is the Lightning

Agosto

August

The original name of this month is Sextilis because it was the 6th month in the Ancient Calendar. Then it was named Augustus in honor of the Emperor Augustus.

This month is dedicated to harvest, storage and conservation (in a broader sense).

In particular August is dedicated to the Goddess Diana or the female polarity of Apollo.

Diana is defined as "Always Distant": she is a non-urban Goddess because she represents the sacralization of woods, forrests and wild places.

Her frantic dance, reserved only to women, is named "Ridda".

During the day Diana protects wild animals preserving their lives; during the night she hunts them giving them Death. In this way Diana embodies both Life and Death as deriving from an unique source.

Sacred animals to Diana are: lion, bear, deer, quail and hunting dog.

As Apollo is represented by the Sun, Diana is represented by the Moon. Her main symbol is the Bow representing the crescent moon and the "wild weapon".

giovedì 1 luglio 2010

Luglio/July

_________________________

The original name of this month was Quintilis because it was the fifth month in the ancient calendar of King Numa. Then it was named Julius in honour of Julius Caesar.

This month is dedicated to the God Apollo: this is thus a period dedicated to transcendence, wisdom, medicine, music and poetry.

Apollo is associated to the Sun and to "what exists without depending on the world's events" being also defined as "who stands aside", "the Abstract" or "Always Distant".

Sacred animals to Apollo are: swan, wolf, deer and, above all, dolphin.
Sacred plants and trees are: cypress, hyacinth and laurel.

Ludi Saeculares were dedicated to Apollo (and to Diana - his female polarity): these games were held in Rome every 100 years.

Dead

In the Traditional Roman Religion this world, this time, this reality only matter: "hic et nunc" (here and now). Life is an unique occasion which for this reason has to been appreciated and fully lived.

There's no "another world", or an "another life" more than the one we currently have: there is no Paradise, no Hell. Dead are and remain "something else" and excluded from human dimension. The memory everyone of us trasmits to the others is the only thing that really matters.

According to the "mos maiorum" the memory of the action of lived and living people matters rather than the action of dead (which is likely to be a nonsense).

Any contact between the living and the dead dimensions is considered as a "funestus" act or an impure act. A family in grief is defined as a "Familia Funesta" or impure and contaminated: this familiy has to be turned into the condition of "Familia Pura"

The generic idea of the dead is identified with the imagine of the Manes through a term which in latin language is always plural.

I morti

______________________

This month is enterely devoted to women. Juno has his name from Juno a great Goddess representing the sacralization of the female being.

Juno represents marriage, fertility, birth and motherhood. Her sacred ministress, the flaminica - the flamen Dialis' wife (Jupiter Minister) every first day of the month, sacrificed to Juno a white heifer to ask protection for women.

Sacred animals for Juno are: goose and crow.
  • Juno Fluonia - sacralization of menstruation
  • Juno Domiduca - sacralization of the movement of the young wife to her new house
  • Juno Cinxia - sacralization of the opening of the young wife belt after the marriage
  • Juno Juga e Iunxia - sacralization of wedding
  • Juno Lucina - sacralization of birth
Juno is the female polarization of the Genius. Every man has his own Genius or his spiritual and invisible copy who keep the material part alive. In the same way every woman has her own Juno.

Juno e Genius give suggestions and advices, force, energy and determine individual attitude. At every birthday men and women celebrate their respective Genius or Juno.

Genius/Juno

What animates man? What makes man think and feel?

According to Traditional Roman Religion this function is sacralized by Genius (expression of male nature) and Juno (expresison of female nature).

Genius/Juno represent "personality" created at birth: they are a sort of guardians accompanying us throughout our life. The cult of Genius/Juno is a duty of the entire family: the festivity of Genius/Juno corresponds to the everyone's "Dies Natalis" from which it has derived the personal "birthday".

On human body Genius/Juno are ideally placed in the forehead: their symbol is the snake and this symbol links Genius/Juno to the Lares.

Genius/Juno give personality to man and other expressions of Genius/Juno give personality i.e. to sites as in the case of the Genius Loci. Genius Loci gives personality and identity to a specific place or site: he is the spirit of a place, its soul. It is thus essential to have the capability to acknowledge the presence of a Genius Loci in every place we are in, giving to him the necessary respect: nobody of us is owner of a place because we are only guests.

We must give respect for the places where we live or visit because we are called to give respect to the related Genius Loci.

Genius/Juno

Maggio/May

April 21st: Dies Natalis Romae - Palilie

Rome has been founded on 21st april 753 b.c. over the Palatine by Romolus with a rite based on the delimitation of the templum with a lituum, auspices' reading and interpretation, offering to Gods and to the Earth, delimitation of the sacred space with a lituum, construction of the pomerium (sacred border) traced on the ground with a plough's furrow, delimitation of the Via Sacra around the pomerium.

Through this rite Rome became not only a physical space, but also a metaphysical space where great energies and forces are concentrated. Rome is thus not only a "place" but also a "meta-place". Thanks to this consecration, or a translation into the Gods' dimension, Rome may be the center of other religions but it will remain the site of the Ancient Gods forever.

Costantinopolis is the only city in the world founded with the same rite.

__________________________________________________________

This day is dedicated also to the ancient Goddess Pale, Goddess of shepherds, sheep farming and flocks.

This is a purification day during which flat bread and milk are eaten and offered to this Goddess.

At night straw fires are lighted.
In the past cattle was passed three times through these fires as a purification rite.

Paganism and Politics

Political committment and civil responsibility have a peculiar role in Traditional Roman Paganism: surely a strong sense of civil responsibility and committment towards a community play an important role because a community is assumed to be a sort of an extended family.

In the same time a religious dimension supports the political sphere because, like in those dimension considered "normal", politics must have some religious and sacred implications.

The family (sacralized in the Goddess Vesta) is the bias around which a community is focused and sacralized (in its public meetings) in the God Quirinus. Politics are above all sacralized by the figure of Jupiter (the male polarization of the numen Jupiter/Juno)

Jupiter is the sacralization of the "near sky": he gives signs in the sky materialized by the birds' flying (augures observe them in a part of the sky ideally limited - templum). Jupiter is however the sacralization of politics and law, power and justice: he is the witness, granting oaths and punishing those violating public and private agreements.

In this way, political committment is not only a civil responsibility but also a form of religious coherence.

Gods and Mankind

According to the Traditional Roman Religion, the relations between the human and divine dimensions are mainly based on the concept of "respect" (pietas) humans must pay to the divine dimension which permeates real world in its "normality", and on those "sings" the divine dimension sends to mankind: these signs must be acknowledged and intepreted (divinatio)

This relation is thus inspired to "awareness", a sense of limit, prudence and a constant vision and intepretation pf the world in all its manifestation.

Uomini e Dei

  • 4 - 10 marzo: Ludi Megalesi
  • 7 marzo: Agonalia di Marte, Iunonalia
  • 9 marzo: Armi di Marte
  • 14 marzo: Equiria, Mamuralia
  • 15 - 27 marzo: Megalesia, Anna Perenna
  • 17 marzo: Liberalia
  • 23 marzo: Tubilustrium

March

After having celebrated the Februalia as final rite of purification during the last day of February, on March the 1st the Sacred Year begins.

March is thus a very important month characterized by many celebrations.

March is enterely dedicated to Life and Nature re-birth in all their expressions. This month is dedicated to generating forces converging into two polatiries: Mars (Male Polarity) and Cybele (Female Polarity)

Mars - usually wrongly associated to the God of War - is the "He-generating". he is symbolically Romolus and Remus father being in this way Father of the Roman People. Mars is the Fecundating Male Energy: Earth, Plants, Flowers, Fields, etc. He is defined as Marmor (shining, gleaming) but more frequently as Marmar (Reproductive Force of the Nature) or Gradivus (Fecundating Vegetation).

Sacred plants for Mars are: figtree and oak. Sacred animals are: wolf, horse and woodpecker.

If Janus is the sacralization of the "beginnings", Mars is the sacralization of the "activity" and "things' blossoming". To Mars are dedicated the "Sacred Pimavere" of youth who entered the adult life as foundators and fecundators.
His sacred symbol is a Lance.

Cybele is the female polarity of fecundity (She-Fecundating). Cybele is by definition the Great Mather embracing all the Goddess having specific characters. In the same time she is associated to the main Goddess: Iuno, Vesta, Tellus, Bona Dea, Maia, Gaia, Flora, Ceres, Pomona, etc.

Cybele is the perennial energy of the Nature renewal. She is the Lady of the Plants: pine, boxtree and oak are sacred plants to Cybele. She is also the Lady of the Animals. Humans have learnt from her how to cultivate corn and cereals.

Cybele's sacred symbols are: the Tower and the Lion.

  • 1 - 6 march: Matronalia, Fire of Vesta
  • 4 - 10 march: Ludi Megalesi
  • 7 march: Mars' Agonalia, Iunonalia
  • 9 march: Mars' Weapons

  • 19 march: Mars' Weapons, Great Quinquatria (by 21st march)
  • 23 march: Tubilustrium

Even Details are Sacred

The presence of "divine" in any single act and moment of human existence represents an important aspect of traditional roman religion. Each single detail of life around us is thus depicted by "small Gods/Goddesses". Making details sacred basically means to give a special respect for them.

Children's birth and life are typical examples of this divine presence:
  • Vitumnus/a - giving life
  • Sentinus/a - giving feelings
  • Opis - she takes the child from the soil at birth
  • Vaticanus/a - first child's whimpers
  • Levana - she takes the child from the ground
  • Cumina - she defends the baby in the cradle
  • Potina - she quenches child's thirst
  • Educa - she nourishes children
  • Paventinus/a - he/she defends childred from fear
  • Abeona - she defends the child when going to school
  • Adeona - she defends the child when coming back from school

In the same way, agriculture is characterized by the presence of many Gods/Goddesses.

  • Vervactor - the fallow
  • Reparator - mending fields
  • Imporcitor - great ploughing
  • Insitor - the sowing
  • Oberator - superficial ploughing
  • Occator - the harrow
  • Sorritor - the rake
  • Messor - the harvest
  • Convector - transporting harvest
  • Conditor - harvest storage

  • 13-21 febbraio - Parentalia
  • 15 febbraio - Lupercalia
  • 17 febbraio - Quirinalia
  • 21 febbraio - Feralia
  • 23 febbraio - Terminalia
  • 24 febbraio - Regifugium
  • 27 febbraio - Equiria
  • 28 febbraio - Februalia

February

February (Februa) is dedicated to purification. During this month the festivities are focused on the memory of defuncts, magical animals, peaceful activities and sleep. The tools used for purification are named februum.

It is important to remind that the traditional year will begin in March: thus purification during February is necessary to prepare the beginning of the new year.

This month is dedicated to Februus and Februa (male and feminine numen of "The Purifying") who, being positive energies, are opposed to Febris (The Fever), negative energy.

The festivities during February are thus linked to purification activities (for the body, spirit, sites, objects, etc.)

February the 1st - Amburbium: festivity for the purification of villages and cities and their public sites through a circular procession holding a februum (a purification tool). The same ceremony can be applied for home purification.
  • february 13th - 21st - Parentalia
  • february 15th - Lupercalia
  • february 17th - Quirinalia
  • february 21st - Feralia
  • february 23rd - Terminalia
  • february 24th - Regifugium
  • february 27th - Equiria
  • february 28th - Februalia

Roman Gods/Goddess

A peculiar aspect of the Antique Roman Gods/Goddess, highly differentiating them from those deriving from Greek or Eastern traditions, is linked to the fact that they have no marriages, sons, scandals, adventures, friends, enemies.

In brief they haven't a mythology in the common and popular meaning and sense.

Main Gods and Goddess have a frequent and relevant role in human life and natural cycles: others however appear as presences in "time" being distributed along the traditional calendar (for this reason roman calendar shows a ritual and cultual value rather than a cronological and cronometric one). Other Gods/Goddess are more "spatial" being linked to some specific sites or certain kind of sites.

Nonetheless everyone hides or reveals a power in sè. They are great single powers or small groups of forces.

Anything having a character of "sacrality" is considered "normal" according to the roman tradition: for this reason, above all these small groups of forces, play a relevant role in roma n religion because they may be imprisoned into a "function", an act or even in a "fraction of an act".

January

This month is entirely dedicated to Ianus, a male God, symbolizing the sacralization of the "beginnings", springs, doors and gates (Ianua)

Ianus essentially sacralizes the "passage" both in spatial and in temporal sense unifying two spaces as well as two times. Also for this reason Ianus is symbolically represented having two opposite faces one oriented to the past and one to the future (also having however a third face not visible for the common man).

Ianus' main symbol is a couple of keys: a golden and a silver key.

Ianus' female polarity are Carna, Iuturna and Diana.

Main festivities in January are:

  • January 9th : Ianus' Agonalia
  • January 11th: Iuturnalia
  • January 12th - 15th: Carmentalia
  • January 22nd - 24th: Paganalia
  • January 25th: Sementina

Gennaio

  • 11 Gennaio: Iuturnalia
  • 12 - 15 Gennaio: Carmentalia
  • 22 - 24 Gennaio: Paganalia
  • 25 Gennaio: Sementina
